A Unique and Powerful Perspective on Mental Health and Daily Functioning

Emma Cooper is a Mental Health Occupational Therapist (OT) based at the Sippy Downs clinic — bringing a unique and highly valuable perspective to the clinic's multidisciplinary team. As an occupational therapist specialising in mental health, Emma's focus is on the intersection between psychological wellbeing and a person's ability to engage meaningfully in the daily activities and roles that matter most to them — work, relationships, self-care, parenting, and daily life.

As an Accredited Mental Health OT (AMHOT) Emma's approach is of an evidence-based discipline that complements traditional psychological therapy focusing on thoughts, emotions, and behaviour, while also bringing an additional lens: understanding how mental health difficulties impact a person's functional capacity, and developing practical strategies to restore and build that capacity. This makes Emma particularly valuable for clients whose mental health challenges are significantly affecting their ability to work, parent, maintain relationships, or manage daily life.

Emma works across the full lifespan — from infants and young children through to older adults — and her breadth of clinical experience is reflected in the extraordinary range of presentations she works with. She offers individual therapy, couples therapy (including 50 and 90-minute appointments), and family therapy, making her one of the most versatile clinicians at the clinic. Her NDIS experience is a particular strength, and she is well-versed in supporting clients to achieve their NDIS goals through evidence-based therapy.

Evidence-Based Therapy Tailored to Each Person, Family, and Stage of Life

Emma's therapeutic approach integrates occupational therapy frameworks with evidence-based psychological approaches — always keeping the client's goals and meaningful outcomes at the centre of her work. Her sessions are practical, collaborative, and focused on real-world outcomes.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)The gold-standard evidence-based approach for anxiety, depression, OCD, and a wide range of mood and behavioural presentations — adapted effectively for children, adolescents, and adults.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)Builds psychological flexibility and values-driven living — highly effective for anxiety, depression, chronic stress, and supporting individuals navigating difficult life circumstances.

Family & Couples TherapySkilled in working with couples and families navigating conflict, communication breakdown, relationship strain, and the challenges of raising neurodiverse children — with extended 90-minute sessions available.
Trauma-Informed PracticeAn overarching clinical framework that recognises the impact of trauma across the lifespan — integrated into all of Emma’s work with individuals, young people, and families.
Mindfulness & Emotion RegulationPractical, evidence-based approaches to building emotional regulation skills — particularly effective for children, adolescents, and adults managing anxiety, mood difficulties, and stress.

Emma's Approach to Care

“I believe every person — regardless of age, background, or how they are wired — deserves to feel understood and supported. My role is to meet people exactly where they are, and walk alongside them towards something better.”

Emma’s warmth and genuine care for the people she works with is evident from the very first session. She has a natural ability to connect with children and young people — including those who are anxious, avoidant, or have had difficult experiences with services in the past — and to build the kind of trust that makes real therapeutic progress possible. Her collaborative approach means that parents are never left on the outside: she works with families as a unit, helping parents understand their child’s experience and equipping them with practical tools to support their child at home and at school.

In her personal life, Emma is a foster parent — a commitment that speaks volumes about her character and her deep belief in the importance of stable, nurturing relationships for children navigating adversity. This lived experience gives her a profound and authentic understanding of the challenges faced by children in the care system, and by the families and carers who support them. It is not something she wears as a badge — it is simply part of who she is, and it shows in the quality of her care.

For adult clients, Emma brings the same quality of presence and the same commitment to evidence-based, person-centred care. Whether someone is navigating anxiety, relationship difficulties, grief, or the exhaustion of caring for a neurodiverse child, they will find in Emma a clinician who listens deeply, responds thoughtfully, and works collaboratively towards meaningful and lasting change.
